Quick start sends Mitchell grapplers to ninth straight win

The Kernels registered pins on three of the first four matches to top Aberdeen Central.

ABERDEEN -- Mitchell High School recorded five pins to take down Aberdeen Central for its ninth consecutive dual win on Thursday.

The Kernels recorded three pins in the first four matches and jumped out to a 30-6 lead on the Golden Eagles to improve to 12-1 overall and 2-0 in Eastern South Dakota Conference action this season with a 49-23 win.

Mitchell’s Tyson Degen pinned Ayden Gisi in 4 minutes, 29 seconds to begin the dual at 160 pounds. Aberdeen Central’s Samuel Calvert responded with a pin of Seth Foote at 170 in the following match, but Joe Van Overschelde pinned Dylan Schaunaman in 4 minutes, 42 seconds at 170 and Blake Fredericks pinned Landon Merkel in 1 minute, 35 seconds at 195.

After the Kernels picked up back-to-back wins via forfeit, the Golden Eagles rattled off consecutive wins, but Mitchell came back to win four of the next five matches.

Brandon Sparks pinned Jacob Bellefeuille at the 4-minute mark at 120, while Jagger Tyler earned a 7-5 decision on Brock Martin at 126 and Brock Sparks earned a 12-4 major decision over Logan Ortiz at 132. Riley McGinnis also recorded a fall on Cordell Rychlik in 2:39 at 145.

Mitchell returns to action with a triangular against Yankton and Harrisburg at 5 p.m. Tuesday in Yankton.
