MITCHELL — A number of seventh- and eighth-grade athletes had top finishes at the Little Palace Relays on Thursday afternoon at Joe Quintal Field. Participating teams included the Kernels, Mitchell Christian, Chamberlain, St. Joseph’s Indian School, Miller and Yankton.
In the seventh-grade girls 100 meter dash, Abbie Hohn won the event for the Kernels in a time of 14.45 seconds, followed by Ava Prunty in second place (14.53). In the 200, Reese Skustad, of Chamberlain, was second (31.08) and Mitchell Christian’s Elinor Deline was third (31.14). In the 400, Prunty was second (1:08.33), Deline was third (1:10.91) and Hohn was fourth (1:13.04). Prunty also took second place at 800 meters (2:47.53). In the 1,600-meter race, Chamberlain’s Grace Phillips was second (6:41.83) and Mitchell’s Sarah Bultje was third (7:21.54). The seventh-grade girls discus was won by Chamberlain’s Piper Powell with a throw of 65 feet, 6 inches. The shot put was won by Yankton’s Layla Rogers (28-8), with Powell second (28-4).
In the girls eighth-grade races, Mitchell Christian’s Maddie Nebelsick won the 400-meter race in a time of 1:13.08, with teammate Trudie Hofer taking second place (1:16.00). In the 800, Mitchell’s Londyn Schroder won in a time of 2:55.97, with fellow Kernel McKayla Linke taking fourth place (3:13.94), and Schroeder also won the 1,600-meter race (6:23.06). The Kernels’ Ryan Keys took second in the 200 (31.25), with Emily Ellis taking third (31.78) and MCS’ Hofer was fourth (32.06).
Mitchell’s Lily Steele shared top honors in the eighth-grade girls shot put (32-2) with Miller’s Faith Baumberger and Kernel Liliana Luque was fourth (26-8). Steele was second in the discus (63-1) behind Baumberger (63-9).
In the boys seventh-grade sprints, Chamberlain’s Chevy Fees won the 100 (12.82) and 200 (27.18), and Fees also won the long jump (17-2). Lawson LeBrun, of Mitchell, was fourth in the 100 in 13.79 seconds. Evan Mitchell won the 400 and 800 meter races for the Kernels, with Mitchell running 1:04.51 in the 400 and 2:32.78 in the 800. Noah Bennett took second place in the 800 in 2:33.17, while Marek Antaya was third (2:38.57) and Devin Henkel was fourth (2:41.29). Henkel also took fourth in the 400 (1:07.45). Brady Asbenson, of Mitchell Christian, won the 200 hurdles in 33.91 seconds.

Mitchell won a pair of seventh-grade boys relays, with Nolan Widstrom, Ethan Hegg, Jack Massey and Michael Gomez won the 4x100 relay in 56.14 seconds for the Kernels, while Henkel, Kalen Rients, Ben Anderson and Kyler Mayer won the 4x400 in a time of 4:40.53. Mitchell Christian’s Luke Mentele won the seventh-grade high jump (5-2). The Kernels’ Owen Schelske won the shot put (34-0) and was third in the discus (76-11).
In the boys eighth-grade sprints, Mitchell Christian’s Carson Johnson was second in the 100 (12.56) and 200 (25.47). Mitchell’s Gage Schmidt was third in the 200 (27.71). In the 400, Mitchell’s Dawson Smith was second (1:05.81) and Luke Van’t Haaf was fourth (1:09.73) in the 400. The Kernels went 1-2 in the 800 run, with Colin Pickett finished in 2:40.27 and Drake Grenier was second in 2:43.97. In the 1,600-meter run, Mitchell Christian’s Silas Holdeman was the winner in 5:04.45 and Luke Mentele was third (5:33.82). Gage Schmidt, of Mitchell, took second place in the 200 hurdles (30.99).
Mitchell Christian’s eighth-grade 4x800 relay team won in 11:04.13, led by Mentele, Sawyer Holdeman, Luke Atnip and Silas Holdeman. In the boys long jump, MCS’ Carson Johnson won with a mark of 18 feet, 10 inches. Bryer Stach won the boys shot put for Mitchell with a throw of 44-10, with Mason Kempf fourth (38-0). Kempf won the discus with a throw of 119-10. Matthew Haring took second place in the high jump (4-4) and Tucker Pietz was third (4-2).
