South Dakota Class A Legion baseball state tourney: Eight-team field filled with strong contenders

The Class A tournament kicks off Wednesday at Fitzerald Stadium in Rapid City, where Mitchell (25-13) is the No. 3 seed.

RAPID CITY — Only eight teams remain in pursuit of the 2022 South Dakota Class A American Legion baseball state championship, with the final push toward a state title starting Wednesday.

A new champion will be crowned, as the 2021 winners of Renner were knocked out in the play-in round, evidence of the strength of this year’s field.

With quarterfinal action set to get underway on Wednesday morning at Fitzgerald Stadium, home of Rapid City Post 22, here’s a look at the eight-team field:

No. 1 Brookings Post 74

Records
Overall: 29-11
In-state: 20-7
Against the field: 8-7

Results
Play-in: Swept No. 15 Sturgis, 9-5 and 8-5
Against Mitchell: Swept doubleheader on July 14, 5-2 and 5-3.
Last year’s tournament: No. 10 seed, lost to Harrisburg in the play-in round.
