Post 18 splits a pair of contests on opening day of the Hladky Memorial Tournament
Mitchell Post 18 shutout Monarch (Colo.) 10-0 and fell to Gallatin Valley (Mont.) 1-2 on its first day of action at the Hladky Memorial Tournament in Gillette, Wyo.
GILLETTE, Wyo. — Entering the Hladky Memorial Tournament on an eight-game win streak, Mitchell Post 18 split a pair of contests in its first day of action.
Scoring five unanswered runs in the second inning of Game 1 helped Post 18 reach a 10-0 win against Monarch (Colo.). In the second game against Gallatin Valley (Mont.), Post 18 was out-hit 7-4 and came up one run shy of going into extra innings as they fell 2-1 in seven innings of play.
Against Monarch, both Seth Muth and Dylan Soulek went 2-for-3 at the plate and drove in a total of six runs. Jonah Schmidt drove in two runs as well while Peyton Mandel and Lukas Bennett scored two runs apiece.
Schmidt earned the win for Post 18, striking out seven batters and only allowed three hits in 4 ⅔ innings. Mason Geraets struck out one batter in less than one inning pitched.
In Game 2, against Gallatin Valley, Brock Sparks went 2-for-3 while Soulek and Jake Helleloid had one hit each. Soulek scored the lone run for Post 18 as Jace Larson hit a sacrifice bunt that brought Soulek home in the bottom of the fourth inning. Peyton Schroder pitched all seven innings, allowing seven hits and two earned runs.
Mitchell Post 18 (15-7) will resume tournament play tomorrow, taking on Spokane (Wash.).
