MITCHELL — Friday night was Senior Night for the Mitchell High School wrestling team.
But by the end of 14 matches, the dual contest was tinged in green.
Pierre, the No. 1 team in seed points for the Class A dual standings entering Friday night, had five pins and three technical falls in a 58-15 win over the Kernels at the MHS Gym.
“I thought we went out and battled tonight. Pierre, that’s one of the top teams in the state that we saw, so you’re going to get challenged.” MHS coach Andy Everson said. “Overall, we competed pretty hard but there were just a few matches where I felt like we got outhustled and they had the faster pace we did. That’s the thing we’ve been working on, trying to chain-wrestle and working from one move to the next without having to stop.”

Two of Mitchell’s three victories came from seniors in their final home matches. Cruze Allhiser controlled his opponent Walker West and earned a pin in 3 minutes and 7 seconds at 113 pounds and Jagger Tyler was a 6-1 winner by decision against Lucas Chamberlin at 152 pounds, improving to 33-3 on the season.

“Coming into the end of the season, that’s what you want to see from our seniors,” Everson said. “Those guys are amped up for the postseason and wrestling like we want them to be and we’re excited to see what they can accomplish.”
Mitchell had a strong performance from Penn Long at 126 pounds, as well, defeating Lincoln Houska with a third-period fall. But Pierre had 21 takedowns to Mitchell’s seven in the dual and scored 17 times on nearfall points, while Mitchell had only four nearfall scores. For the Governors (10-1 in duals), Gavin Stotts (195), Elijah Boutchee (220), Joshua Rydberg (285), Hudson Shaffer (132) and Chase Carda (145) each won by pins, while Trey Lewis (170), Chance Carda (182) and Tristan Spencer (138) each had technical falls, as Pierre led 37-0 before Mitchell got on the scoreboard with Allhiser.
The Kernels (6-11 in duals) and Pierre will wrestle in their final regular-season tournament of the year on Saturday at Yankton, starting at 9 a.m. Mitchell closes its dual season on Feb. 9 at Watertown in a triangular with Brandon Valley. The Region 3A state-qualifying meet for both Mitchell and Pierre is on Feb. 18 at Todd County High School in Mission.
