MVPCS, Parkston, Red Raiders, KWLPG among those to claim multiple titles at Wagner Invitational

Redfield Area pulls out narrow team race with Titans

WAGNER, S.D. — A fierce battle atop the team standings at the Wagner Invitational on Saturday went to Redfield Area, which edged Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney by just one point for the points title.

The Pheasants scored 200 points, while the Titans checked in with 199 points in the 17-team event. Redfield finished with 11 placewinners and six finalists including three champions: Mason Fey (160), Sean Domke (195) and Grady Fey (285). Rounding out the top-five, Parkston was third with 158 points, Kimball/White Lake/Platte-Geddes had 151.5 points and Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon had 149 points, finishing just ahead of host Wagner (146.5).

For the Titans, Cole Pranger had a pair of pins in the 220-pound bracket, including a third-period pin in the championship match to win an individual title over Redfield Area’s Gavin Nichols. At 126 pounds, Hadley Tobin improved to 35-1 on the season with a 3-1 decision over KWLPG’s Iden Myers in the championship match.

Parkston picked up a pair of champions, led by Kaden Holzbauer (113) and Porter Neugebauer (152). Holzbauer looked strong, earning three pins and a championship major decision by a score of 13-0 over Bennett County’s Gavin Risse. Neugebauer won the bracket with a 4-2 decision over MVPCS’ Griffin Tobin in the championship match, improving to 26-4 on the season.

KWLPG was led by Gavin Braun’s championship at 106 pounds, which included a 1-0 decision over Wagner’s Karstyn Lhotak in the semifinals and a 13-4 major decision in the championship match over Redfield’s Brady Risetter, who had one loss on the season entering the day. Chase Varilek won the 138-pound championship for the Wildkats, capped with a 5-2 decision over Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon’s Brady Bierema in the title round. Varilek is now 25-4 on the campaign. KWLPG’s Grayson Hanson (160) was a second-place finisher as well.

Riley Roberts and Jhett Breen got the host Red Raiders atop the podium on Saturday. Roberts won the 145-pound championship with an 8-3 decision over KWLPG’s Carter Lenz, while Breen was victorious at 132 pounds with a third period technical fall over Philip Area’s Gage Ravellette. Wagner’s Nolan Dvorak (195) and Brennan Leines (285) each took second place.

In a battle of top wrestlers in Class B at 182 pounds, Isaac Crownover, of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon, knocked off Redfield Area’s Corbin Schwartz by 10-4 decision in the championship match. Crownover is now 31-1, while Schwartz has the same record after his first loss of the year.
