BROOKINGS — Mitchell White teener baseball stayed undefeated at the South Dakota Class A 13-and-under state baseball tournament on Friday with a 9-1 win over the Yankton Reds at Bob Shelden Field.

The victory was powered by an eight-run fourth inning, allowing Mitchell to end the game in the sixth inning via the eight-run rule. Kaiden Allen had two hits and two RBIs, with Penn Long and Denen Ellwein each picking up two hits, with a double from Long and a triple from Ellwein. Mitchell had 11 hits total, with six going for extra-base hits, and Mitchell stole 10 bases, with five for Long and two for Allen.

The pitching effort was a combined no-hitter for Collin Weier and Avery Kaus. Weier threw four innings with one earned run allowed and five strikeouts, with Kaus recording two innings on the mound and a strikeout without allowing a hit.

Mitchell White (23-15-2) takes on the Watertown Grey Sox at 10 a.m. Saturday at South Dakota State's Erv Huether Field for a critical game. Both teams are 2-0, meaning the winner will claim the pool and will advance to the championship bracket on Sunday.

Mitchell Black loses second straight heartbreaker at state tourney

PIERRE — For the second straight day, the Mitchell Black teener team lost a lead in the opponent's final at-bat of the game, falling 8-5 to Sioux Falls East on Friday at the South Dakota Class A 14-and-under state baseball tournament in Pierre.


Mitchell Black had five runs in the top of the first inning to build a solid start and led 5-4 after five innings of play, only to see Sioux Falls East score four runs in the sixth inning to take the lead. Mitchell outhit Sioux Falls East, 7-6, but committed six errors in the loss.

Van Johnson had two RBIs for Mitchell, and Jaxson Hartman had two hits on offense. Tyler Christensen started on the mound for Mitchell Black and took the loss, throwing 5 2/3 innings and allowing six hits, eight runs (two earned) and striking out four. Johnson recorded the final out for Mitchell Black in the sixth inning and had a strikeout.

Mitchell (15-27) will close out state tournament pool play at 6 p.m. Saturday against Pierre.
