Mitchell girls tennis opens with two victories at Huron triangular

Kernels earn first victories of MHS athletic season

HURON — The Mitchell High School athletic season opened on Tuesday with a pair of victories for the Kernels girls tennis teams, with Mitchell defeating Huron 7-2 and Aberdeen Roncalli 9-0.

Against Huron, Mitchell's Amber Moller opened the season with a 10-6 win over AnneClaire Rubish at No. 1 singles, while Delaney Degen defeated Elizabeth Heinen 10-5 at No. 2 singles. Carsyn Weich and Elly Clement each won at No. 3 and No. 4 singles, respectively, by 10-2 scores and Maddie Childs picked up a 10-4 win at No. 6 singles. Mitchell's doubles pairings of Amber Moller/Delaney Degen, Carsyn Weich/Ireland Blindauer and Elly Clement/Maddie Childs each won their matches.

Mitchell earned a clean sweep in the victories over Aberdeen Roncalli, with Ireland Blindauer picking up a 10-0 win at No. 5 singles, while Elly Clement won 10-1 at No. 4 singles. Deleney Degen was a 10-2 winner over Katherine Kretchman at No. 2 singles, as well. The Kernels also swept all three doubles matches in the debut day of competition.

Mitchell hits the road once again on Aug. 15 with a triangular at Brookings with Sioux Falls Jefferson, starting at 10 a.m., before the Kernels will face Harrisburg at 4 p.m. on Aug. 18 at Hitchcock Park.
