MITCHELL — Facing two of the stronger teams in South Dakota girls tennis on Tuesday, the Mitchell Kernels ended up on the losing end of a pair of duals with Yankton and Sioux Falls Lincoln.

The Gazelles edged Mitchell for the second time this season by a 5-4 margin, while the Patriots defeated Mitchell, 6-3. (Lincoln won the third leg of the triangular at Hitchcock Park by a 5-4 score.)

Yankton won four of the six flights of singles matches, while Mitchell won two of three matches in doubles. It was the same split of matches as the team's first meeting on Sept. 2, when the Gazelles earned a 5-4 win. Carsyn Weich had a 10-3 win over Paige Mitzel at No. 3 singles and Ireland Blindauer had a 10-7 win over Addison Gordon at No. 5 singles. Yankton got two other close matches to go in its favor with a 10-8 win from Frannie Kouri over Elly Clement at No. 4 singles and Evelyne Lima-Zapon over Maddie Childs, 10-8, at No. 6 singles.

The efforts of sisters Nora Krajewski and Sabrina Krajewski helped provide the difference for Yankton. The sisters each won their No. 1 and No. 2 singles matches, respectively, and defeated Amber Moller and Delaney Degen, 10-4 in No. 1 doubles.

Against Sioux Falls Lincoln, Moller led Mitchell's successes, earning a victory at No. 1 singles by forfeit and then teamming with Degen for a 7-5, 6-0 win at No. 1 singles over Eloise Geraets and Charlotte Crawford. Weich and Megan Mastel won at No. 2 doubles to complete Mitchell's victories in the dual by a score of 6-3, 6-4 over Lincoln's Bergen Quello and Grace Miner.

The Patriots won five of the six singles matches, including a pair of closely contested matches at the middle flights. At No. 3 singles, Quello won in three sets over Carsyn Weich, with each going the distance and then some, with a 7-6 (6), 6-7 (2), 10-7 victory. Miner did the same at No. 4 singles for Lincoln, defeating Elly Clement in a 14-12 third set, with a 3-6, 7-5, 14-12 final score.

Both Yankton and Mitchell battled it out in Class A for the last few years since South Dakota moved to a two-class system for tennis but both squads are now in Class AA.

Mitchell (12-5) will host a varsity quadrangular at 9 a.m. Saturday, Sept. 17 at Hitchcock Park, taking on Sioux Falls Jefferson, Spearfish and Yankton.
