Mitchell cheer, dance compete at Brandon Valley Invite

The competition featured nearly 20 schools, with Sioux Falls Jefferson winning the cheer competition and Brandon Valley finishing top in dance.

BRANDON, S.D. — The Mitchell High School competitive cheer and dance teams finished in 10th and 14th, respectively, at the Brandon Valley Invite on Tuesday held at Brandon Valley High School.

In the cheer competition, the Kernels scored 211.5 points, slotting in ahead of Pierre (205.5) and just behind Sioux Falls Washington (214.5). Sioux Falls Jefferson (279.0) took home first place, followed by O'Gorman (268), Harrisburg (260.5), Brookings (258.5) and Sioux Valley (255.0) to round out the top five.

Mitchell was 14th in the dance competition with a score of 234.75, which edged Watertown (234.5) in 15th. The Kernels' 245.0 mark in hip-hop was the eight-best of 14 scores, while a 224.5 was ninth of 10 teams in jazz.

Host Brandon Valley won the dance competition with a mark of 292.5, comprised of the top scores in both jazz (290) and pom (295). The Lynx bested the closely-clustered scores of Dakota Valley (283.5), Washington (281.5), O'Gorman (279.75), and Harrisburg (277.75) in second through fifth place.

Mitchell competes next at the Corn Palace on Saturday, Oct. 8, in the Mitchell Invite, which starts at 10 a.m.
