Mitchell boys cap winning weekend for Marlin teams

Marlin girls earn seventh straight win on Pink the Rink weekend

MITCHELL — The Mitchell Marlins skated to a weekend boys hockey split on Sunday afternoon, blitzing the Yankton Bucks by a score of 11-1 at the Mitchell Activities Center. All three of Mitchell’s wins on the season have come in the last five games.

Mick Dailey had a three-goal game for the Marlins in the victory, in which Mitchell led 4-0 after one period and scored the first six goals of the game. Josh Grosdidier had two goals and an assist, while Tanner Puetz, Levi Loken and Ashton Reimnitz each had a goal and an assist in the win, with Parker Denne scoring and adding two assists.

William Elfstrand and Caden Ziehl were goal-scorers, with Tyson Sabers adding an assist. Goaltender Drake Jerke had 14 saves in the victory for Mitchell.

The Bucks finished the game with just nine skaters and without a goaltender, playing the entire third period with an empty net. Keenan Wagner scored the lone goal for Yankton in the second period. The Marlins scored four times in the period and outshot Yankton for the game, 39-15.

Mitchell (3-8-1) now has seven points on the season, tied with Aberdeen and Sioux Falls 2 in the South Dakota boys standings. As of now, Mitchell would hold the eighth and final spot into the state tournament, one point ahead of Watertown.

The Marlins will play at Sioux Falls 2 at 7:30 p.m. on Saturday, Jan. 22.

Win streak moves to seven for Marlin girls

MITCHELL — The Mitchell Marlins girls hockey team earned its seventh straight win on Saturday, completing a weekend home-and-home sweep over Yankton.

The Marlins won 10-1 at Yankton on Friday and claimed a 7-2 victory over the Gazelles at home on Pink the Rink Day for the Mitchell Skating and Hockey Association.

On Friday, Mitchell had four goals in the opening period and tacked on six more in the second to outrace Yankton. Makenna Tronnes scored twice in the first 6 minutes of the game and finished with three goals. Brynlee Sabers had three goals and an assist in the game and Resse Amick, Samantha Kludt and Kelsey Amick each had a goal and an assist in the victory. Tiffany Hatwan and Tristen Zimmer each added an assist for Mitchell.

Sadie Kludt had 14 saves for the Marlins in the victory, with Mitchell outshooting Yankton, 42-15. Hailey Bottolfson had the lone goal for Yankton.

On Saturday, Mitchell scored four goals in the first period once again against Yankton on the way to outshooting the Gazelles, 43-8. Kelsey Amick had three goals in a four-point performance, with Kate Nash scoring twice. Brooke Jarman and Brynlee Sabers each had four-point games, with one goal and three assists. Eva Vaughan added an assist, as well.

Sadie Kludt had six saves for the Marlins in the win. Lainie Keller and Bryn Kolberg scored goals for Yankton.

Mitchell (13-1) hosts South Dakota standings leader Sioux Falls (13-0) at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 21.

Sioux Center clips Mitchell boys with late winner

MITCHELL — The Mitchell Marlins boys hockey team lost a close home contest Saturday night at the Mitchell Activities Center, falling 5-4 to Sioux Center, Iowa.

Tied at 4-all, the Storm’s Matthew King scored with less than 6 minutes remaining in the game to give Sioux Center a late lead and Mitchell was not able to equalize. Sioux Center outshot Mitchell, 45-34 in the game.

Levi Loken had a pair of goals for the Marlins, with Connor Hohn and Parker Denne each finding the net as well. Tanner Puetz and William Elfstrand each had assists in the game.

Drake Jerke had 40 saves for the Marlins in net, with Sioux Center’s Luke Myers making 30 saves in the win.
