MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School baseball team will be home for the opening weekend of the Class A high school playoffs on Saturday, May 21 at Cadwell Park.
The Kernels (15-7), who picked up the No. 4 seed in the playoffs, will host Sioux Falls Jefferson in its region playoff opener at noon Saturday in Mitchell. The winner of that game will take on either 13th-seeded Sturgis or No. 4 Harrisburg at approximately 4:30 p.m. The Scoopers and Tigers will meet in the other first-round game in Mitchell at about 2 p.m. Saturday. The winner of the four-team, single-elimination bracket advances to the Class A state tournament in Sioux Falls on May 29.
Sioux Falls Roosevelt, which was 17-1 against Class A competition during the season, earned the No. 1 overall seed in the postseason, while Brandon Valley (13-3) and Brookings (17-7) claimed the No. 2 and No. 3 seeds, respectively, before Mitchell slotted in at No. 4. The top-four seeds earned the right to host the opening weekend in the attempt to reach the Class A state tournament, something Mitchell last did in 2019. That was also the last time Mitchell hosted a regional round, although that was necessitated by weather impacting other sites.
The winner of Mitchell’s pod will take on one of three teams from Roosevelt’s pod at noon on May 29 in Sioux Falls in the Class A state semifinals. No. 9 Yankton and No. 8 Pierre will play for the right to face the Rough Riders, who have a first-round bye in the bracket.
