SIOUX FALLS — The Mitchell Marlins held an advantage in shots on goal at game’s end Saturday but were never able to light the goal lamp in a 5-0 loss to Sioux Falls 2 in a boys hockey contest at the Scheels Iceplex.
Mitchell outshot the Flyers 32-26, including a 15-9 margin in the third period. But the Marlins trailed 2-0 after the first two periods and Marcus Halling scored a pair of goals in the third period to help ice the victory for Sioux Falls.
Drake Jerke had 21 saves for the Marlins in the loss. His counterpart, Cole Langston, made 32 saves in the shutout effort.
The Marlins (3-8-1) will host Sioux Falls 1 at 8 p.m. on Friday, Jan. 28 and at Aberdeen at Jan. 29.
Mitchell girls drop home showdown of top teams
MITCHELL — The second meeting of the season involving the top-two teams in South Dakota high school girls hockey went the way of Sioux Falls on Friday night, which lifted the visiting Flyers to a record of 14-0 after a 6-2 win over the Mitchell Marlins.

Mitchell’s Brooke Jarman had the first goal of the game 3 minutes and 6 seconds into the contest, assisted by Brynlee Sabers to put the Marlins ahead 1-0. Sioux Falls tied the game 53 seconds later and added another goal in the final minute of the period to lead 2-1.
In the second period, Sioux Falls added a pair of goals sandwiched around a Sabers’ goal, assisted from Kelsey Amick, that had trimmed the Sioux Falls’ advantage to 3-2. The Flyers added two more in the third period to set the final margin at 6-2. Adriana Clark and Lilly Moon each scored two goals in the victory for the Flyers.
Mitchell outshot Sioux Falls, 24-19. Riley Vander Esch was the winning goal with 22 saves in the victory. Mitchell’s Sadie Kludt made 13 stops in the loss.
Three games remain for the Marlin girls (13-2), who remain in second place and next visit third-place Aberdeen for a 2 p.m. contest on Jan. 29. The season concludes on Feb. 12 at Sioux Center, Iowa, and hosting Huron on Feb. 13.
