GREGORY S.D. — Gregory County lived to see another day in the South Dakota American Legion Class B state baseball tournament after beating Winner/Colome 9-3 on Monday.
Noah Bearshield fired a complete game for Gregory County, allowing three runs and four hits, while striking out four over his seven innings of work.
Winner/Colome struck first with a run in the bottom of the first on an RBI groundout from Pierce Nelson, but Gregory County countered with two of its own in the top of the second to take a lead it wouldn’t relinquish. Gregory County added three in the fourth, two of which came off an RBI single from Gannon Thomas.
Aiden Barfuss homered for the fourth straight tournament game in the bottom of the fourth when he hit a solo home run to center field to cut the deficit to three, but an error from Winner/Colome in the top of the fifth resulted in another run for Gregory County and put Ben Witt on third, who eventually scored. Two more errors in the top of the fifth gave Gregory County two more runs and a 9-2 lead, putting the game out of reach.
Gunnar Stephens accounted for three of the 10 Gregory County hits, going 3-for-4 in the win, while Thomas notched a pair of RBIs.
