Kernels stand at No. 1 in first edition of state gymnastics rankings

The Kernels have a scoring average of 145.625 through four events, which included a season-high score of 147.700 points on Dec. 17 at the Kernels' home Jill McCormick Invitational.

MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School gymnastics team has the No. 1 ranking in Class AA, according to the first edition of rankings from the South Dakota Gymnastics Coaches Association.

The Kernels have a scoring average of 145.625 through four events, which included a season-high score of 147.700 points on Dec. 17 at the Kernels' home Jill McCormick Invitational.

O'Gorman, which is ranked No. 2, has a scoring average of 145.400, and MHS edged the Knights by four-tenths of a point at the McCormick Invite. Harrisburg is No. 3 and the only other team to average more than 142.000 points in their meets.

O'Gorman won the 2022 Class AA state team title despite being the No. 2 team all season behind Mitchell.

In Class A, Hot Springs is the No. 1 team in a tightly bunched pack of teams as of now, with Estelline/Hendricks and Chamberlain both with 1.5 average points.

The Kernels and much of the Class AA division is back in action at 11 a.m. on Jan. 7 at the Brookings Invitational.
