WATERTOWN, S.D. — The Mitchell High School gymnastics team looked strong once again on Thursday night, picking up its second-best score of the season and a Watertown Invitational team title in the process.

Mitchell scored 148.350 as a team, finishing well in front of second-place Watertown at 142.075. Mitchell had the top team score in each of the four events, including a season-best 36.950 in the uneven bars. It was Mitchell's largest margin of victory in a meeting with Watertown — a regular rival for the Class AA team title — this season.

Bentley Bates and Joslin Sommerville led the way for the Kernels, with Bates earning event titles on the balance beam (9.675) and uneven bars (9.650), and taking third in the all-around scoring (36.950). Sommerville was second in the all-around scoring (37.100), scoring second in the vault (9.375) and third in the floor exercise (9.475), and fifth on uneven bars (9.050).

Olivia Prunty was fourth in the all-around (36.700). She had a third-place finish on bars (9.150), was fifth on vault (8.950) and took fifth on beam (9.450).

On vault, Emily Moody was third (9.100) and Kyanna Gropper finished fourth in the uneven bars (9.100). Aubrey Gelderman had a fourth place finish on beam (9.475). Moody also had a fourth-place finish on floor exercise (9.450).

Watertown's Myah Morris was the all-around champion at the meet, scoring 38.300 points. She won the vault (9.825) and floor exercise (9.625) disciplines.

Mitchell has now scored more than 148 team points in three meets this season, with no other team in the state scoring more than 146 points in a meet this year.

Mitchell has four events remaining for the season, with the Brookings Triangular up next on Jan. 27 before Mitchell prepares for the Eastern South Dakota Conference and Class AA state meets on the following two weekends.
