Kernel gymnastics takes first place at Jill McCormick Invite

MITCHELL — The Mitchell High School gymnastics team edged out Sioux Falls O’Gorman by less than a half-point Saturday to win the Jill McCormick Invitational.

The Kernels had the top team score on the vault and bars at the event, held at the MEGA Gymnastics center in Mitchell. Mitchell finished with 147.7 points, just past O’Gorman’s 147.3. Harrisburg was third with 142.775, Watertown was fourth with 133.45 and Yankton was fifth with 128.65.

Mitchell’s Kyra Gropper was the winner of the beam with a 9.675. Maeve Boetel, who had the top scores on the vault and the bars, claimed Saturday’s all-around title with a 38.625. Boetel was last year’s Class AA all-around state champion.

Olivia Prunty, a freshman, was Mitchell’s highest all-around finisher. She was third with a 38.075, Kyra Gropper was fourth at 37.4 and Kyanna Gropper was sixth with a 35.975.

Prunty was third on the floor, an event won by O’Gorman’s Audrey Meyer; fourth in the beam; third on the bars; and second on the vault.
