BROOKINGS — Able to get outdoors for the first match day of the season, the Mitchell Kernels boys tennis team promptly earned its first two team victories of 2023 at the Hillcrest Tennis Courts in Brookings.

The Kernels defeated Aberdeen Roncalli 9-0 and Brookings 9-0 in a triangular on Tuesday afternoon. The effort was a solid bounceback from a 7-2 loss indoors 12 days prior to Yankton on March 30.

Against Brookings, the Kernels yielded just seven games collectively in three doubles matches, as No. 1 pair Luke Jerke and Jager Juracek won 10-3, Levi Loken and Sutton Thompson won 10-1 at No. 2 doubles and Matthew Mauszycki and Zach Fuhrer were victorious 10-3 at No. 3 doubles.

Mauszycki was the most dominant winner in singles, cruising 10-1 over Andrew Hahn at Flight 5. Nathan Wagner won 10-7 over James Park at No. 4 singles and Jerke, Juracek and Fuhrer each won 10-2 in their Flight 1, 2 and 6 matches, respectively. Loken was a 10-4 winner in his No. 3 singles contest.

In the dual with Aberdeen Roncalli, Juracek had a 10-8 win over Palmer Johnson at No. 2 singles for the Kernels, while Jerke was a 10-4 winner at Flight 1 over Cason Hellwig. Loken and Wagner each won 10-5 at Flight 3 and Flight 4, and Mauszycki and Fuhrer each won 10-1 at Flight 5 and Flight 6 singles, respectively.

The Kernels’ doubles pairings had few issues either. Jerke and Juracek teamed up for a 10-1 win at No. 1 doubles, with Loken and Thompson winning 10-3 at No. 2 doubles and Mauszycki and Fuhrer winning 10-4 at No. 3 doubles.

Mitchell (2-1 in duals) is scheduled to have its home debut at 4 p.m. on Friday, April 14 when it hosts Sioux Falls Lincoln for a dual.
