MITCHELL — Averaging more than 16 runs per game entering Monday’s contest at the Cadwell Sports Complex, Harrisburg was not knocked off that pace against the host Mitchell High School softball team in an 18-1, four-inning win for the Tigers.
After a scoreless first inning, Harrisburg blew open the game in the second frame with nine runs. The Kernels scored their lone tally in the bottom of the second inning, only to see the Tigers score six times in the third inning and three more times in the fourth, allowing the 15-run rule to come into effect to end the game early.

At the plate, MHS' Macey Linke scored the only run of the game, while Kenna Soulek had an RBI and a single for the Kernels. Rylee Jennings was the losing pitcher, throwing three innings and allowing 13 hits, 14 runs (10 earned) with two strikeouts. Mallory Miedema threw the final inning for the Kernels in relief.
Harrisburg freshman pitcher Cora Payne allowed one hit and the lone run was unearned, finishing with five strikeouts. Hailey Boer had a home run and drove in four runs, while Madelyn Ducheneaux had three hits and drove in three runs, as Harrisburg finished the day with five extra-base hits.
Mitchell (1-2, 1-2 ESD) plays Sioux Falls Lincoln at 4 p.m. Tuesday at the Cadwell Sports Complex. Harrisburg improved to 5-0 and will face Pierre at home on April 21.
