Hanson Classic boys basketball roundup: Ethan, Lyman pick up victories

MITCHELL -- A big first half set the table for Lyman to win the opening game Saturday at the Hanson Boys Basketball Classic at the Corn Palace over Bridgewater-Emery 58-52.

Lyman (7-2): The Raiders picked up 20 points from Sam McClanahan, who hit six 3-pointers in the win and added six assists. In all, Lyman hit 10 3-pointers and shot 47.7% for the game from the field. The Raiders led 37-18 at halftime after a 22-6 first quarter and led by as many as 23 points early in the third frame. Jacob Sazue had nine points for Lyman, which hosts Jones County in Presho on Jan. 25.

Bridgewater-Emery (6-6): Sutton Arend had a game-high 24 points on 11-for-15 shooting, while pulling down 11 rebounds. Sam Hofer and Aguer Van Sickle each had six points for the Huskies, who were doomed by 28% shooting in the first half and finished shooting nearly 42% for the game. The Huskies host Freeman Academy/Marion on Jan. 25.

Ethan 61, Waubay/Summit 54

MITCHELL -- A strong effort at the free-throw line helped Ethan pick up a victory at the Hanson Classic on Saturday in Game No. 2 of boys basketball action at the Corn Palace. The Rustlers were 17-for-23 on free throws, bettering Waubay/Summit’s 5-for-11 day at the free-throw stripe.

Ethan (7-2): Jay Storm had 20 points and 11 rebounds for the Rustlers, who also had 14 points from Kody Klumb and 13 points from Riley Endres. Kaden Klumb had nine points and nine rebounds. The Rustlers host Canistota on Jan. 24.

Waubay/Summit (8-3): Damon Opdahl had a game-high 27 points for the Mustangs, who forced 20 turnovers. J. Gulbraa had 14 points and 12 rebounds for W/S, which shot 45% for the game. Waubay/Summit is back in action Jan. 28 against Warner at Summit.

West Central 68, Clark/Willow Lake 53

MITCHELL -- A 9-for-14 3-point shooting day for the West Central boys basketball team helped them blitz Clark/Willow Lake in a Hanson Classic meeting Saturday at the Corn Palace.

West Central (7-3): Wilson Droge finished with 21 points on 8-for-9 shooting. Grafton Stroup had 15 points, including three 3-pointers in the win. Dillon Jackson added 15 points as well for the Trojans, who will host Vermillion on Jan. 25 in Hartford.

Clark/Willow Lake (3-4): Kaplan Felberg had 16 points for the Cyclones, while Tyler O’Neill had 12 points and Brady Jordan posted 11 points. CWL hosts Great Plains Lutheran on Jan. 24 in Clark.

Aberdeen Christian 60, Platte-Geddes 49

MITCHELL -- In a battle between ranked foes in Class B, No. 4 Aberdeen Christian took down No. 5 Platte-Geddes at the Corn Palace on Saturday night at the Hanson Classic.

Aberdeen Christian (9-2): Malek Wieker had 24 points, powered by five 3-pointers in the win. The Knights made nine total 3-pointers in the victory and had a 13-for-15 day at the free throw line. Ethan Russell had 17 points and nine rebounds on 6-for-10 shooting in the victory, which was a rematch of a Class B SoDak 16 game from 2021, which was also won by Aberdeen Christian. The Knights play at Herreid/Selby Area on Jan. 25 in Selby.

Platte-Geddes (5-3): Cade Nachtigal had 15 points and six rebounds for the Black Panthers, who shot 26.1% in the first half and finished shooting 35.4% for the game. Dawson Hoffman scored 13 points for P-G, which was 8-for-19 on 3-pointers. Up next, Platte-Geddes visits Tripp-Delmont/Armour on Jan. 24.

Potter County 69, Hanson 59

MITCHELL -- A game with a number of momentum swings definitely swung in the favor of Potter County in the fourth quarter of its Hanson Classic boys basketball game against Hanson at the Corn Palace Saturday. The Battlers won the fourth quarter 22-13 after Hanson had trailed by as many as nine points in the third quarter and trimmed the PC lead to 47-46.

Hanson (6-4): Ethan Cheeseman had a banner day with 24 points and 11 rebounds. Noah Price had 14 points and five assists and Luke Haiar and Kade Waldera each scored seven points for the Beavers, who shot 41.5% for the game. Hanson hosts Sanborn Central/Woonsocket on Jan. 25 in Alexandria.

Potter County (8-1): Cooper Logan had 23 points on 9-for-16 shooting, plus eight rebounds in the win. Seth Sharp had 18 points and eight rebounds and Grant Luikens had 16 points and six rebounds. Drake Bassett added nine points, as the Battlers shot 55% in the game and finished 13-for-17 at the free-throw line. Potter County will visit Faith on Jan. 25.

Sioux Valley 63, Tea Area 47

MITCHELL -- A 36-14 second half for Sioux Valley helped Sioux Valley pick up a victory at the Hanson Classic on Saturday at the Corn Palace.

Sioux Valley (9-2): Oliver Vincent led the way for the Cossacks with 16 points and nine assists, with Alec Squires scoring 12 points and Patrick Carey posting 11 points. Sioux Valley shot 46.4% from the field in the second half and was 10-for-11 at the free-throw line. The Cossacks play at McCook Central/Montrose on Jan. 29.

Tea Area (7-3): Jeff Worth had 14 points and Cael Lundin had 13 points, but was held to only two points in the second half, as the Titans were 4-for-23 shooting in the second half from the field. Tea Area hosts Sioux Falls Christian on Jan. 25.
