Class AA state girls roundup: Washington cruises in opening round past Watertown
Top seed Warriors, No. 2 Governors each move on
SIOUX FALLS — The top-seeded Warriors of Sioux Falls Washington sailed through in the opening game of the Class AA state tournament on Thursday, scoring the first nine points and cruising to a victory over Watertown 48-24 at the Sanford Pentagon.
The Warriors had 19 points from Brooklyn Harpe, plus nine from Grace Peterson in the win, which saw Washington up 13-5 at halftime and 21-12 at the intermission, before a 14-5 third-quarter surge put the game out of reach. Washington finished with a 26-6 edge on scoring in the paint.
Maddy Rhode led the Arrows in scoring with eight points, to go along with seven from Emery Thury. But Watertown’s leading scorer, Jaida Young, was held scoreless on an 0-for-9 shooting day, and the Arrows’ were 8-for-40 from the field and 3-for-17 on 3-pointers, with 18 turnovers.
Washington (19-3) will face Sioux Falls Jefferson in Friday night’s semifinal round. Watertown (12-10) will play in the consolation bracket against Mitchell on Friday.
Pierre 42, Rapid City Stevens 34
SIOUX FALLS — Second-seeded Pierre kept Rapid City Stevens from scoring from the 3-point line in a Class AA state quarterfinal game at the Sanford Pentagon.
The victory came despite 29% shooting from the field in the game from the Governors. Remington Price scored 15 points and picked up seven steals. Lennix DuPris scored eight points for the Governors, who led 23-17 at halftime and kept the Raiders at arm's length in the second half.
For Stevens, Isabell Higgins scored 13 points, while Taaliyah Porter chipped in nine. Stevens got to within 36-32 with 22 seconds left but Pierre salted the game away at the free-throw line in the game's dying seconds.
Pierre (19-3) will take on either O'Gorman or Harrisburg in Friday's second semifinal game. Stevens (14-8) heads to the consolation bracket.
