HURON — Howard got close to a victory on Friday afternoon at the Class B state basketball tournament, but Castlewood prevailed 51-47 in the consolation bracket at the Huron Arena.
After trailing by as many as nine points with three minutes left, Howard had a series of chances to tie or take a lead in the game but could not muster the key basket late. Lyndsey Archer made a 3-pointer with 57 seconds left put Castlewood up five.
When Tana Hoyer made her first 3-pointer of the day with 21 seconds left to get the lead back down to two points, Howard got a missed free throw from the Warriors but could not convert on a Dakota Spader 3-pointer for the lead, and Gracie Haug made two free throws with four seconds left to seal the game for Castlewood.
Kate Connor had 17 points and nine boards but battled foul trouble throughout the game. Canyon Kidd had 10 points and Abby Aslesen had eight points and 12 rebounds for Howard, which finished 5-for-26 on 3-pointers and shot 30.5% on field goals in the game.
For Castlewood, Madeline Horn led the Warriors with 15 points and eight rebounds, with 13 points and eight rebounds for Mackenzie Everson.

Howard (19-6) will meet with Sully Buttes in the noon game Saturday to decide the Class B seventh-place position, while Castlewood faces Jones County for fifth place.
