Burke moves into the top-5 in Class B for the first time this season

MITCHELL — Below is the latest South Dakota Media volleyball poll, issued for the week of Sept. 6, 2022.

Teams are listed with first place votes in parentheses, record, points and previous ranking.

Class AA

1. O'Gorman (17), 3-0, 85; 2. Harrisburg, 7-0, 67; 3. Jefferson, 2-0, 39; 4. Pierre, 5-0, 31; 5. Washington, 1-1, 23.

Shuffling around: Aside from O'Gorman remaining in its top position, there were changes throughout the poll, with Harrisburg, Jefferson and Pierre all moving up one spot in this week's rankings. Washington, which ranked No. 2 last week, dropped after a five-set loss to Roosevelt, which is the Rough Riders' only win so far this season in four matches. For locals looking to see Harrisburg in action, Mitchell will take on the second-ranked Tigers on Thursday at MHS.

Others receiving votes: Huron (6-0) 9; Roosevelt (1-3) 1.


Class A

1. Sioux Falls Christian (17), 6-1, 85; 2. Dakota Valley, 3-0, 68; 3. Wagner, 6-1, 48; 4. Rapid City Christian, 9-3, 17; 5. Canton, 8-0, 14.

Charging C-Hawks: Canton is the newcomer to the Class A rankings this week, with the C-Hawks using an 8-0 start to climb into the No. 5 slot. Five of Canton's wins have been at home and overall, the C-Hawks' opponents' win percentage stands at .492. They will be tested in the next week, with matches at Elk Point-Jefferson, hosting Dell Rapids and at No. 2 Dakota Valley. Aside from Canton, the first four positions in the poll remain steady.

Others receiving votes: Platte-Geddes (5-0) 13, Hamlin (3-0) 5, Garretson (5-2) 2, Elkton-Lake Benton (2-0) 1, Florence-Henry (4-0) 1, Baltic (6-1) 1.

Class B

1. Warner (17), 8-0; 2. Northwestern, 5-2, 65; 3. Chester Area, 5-2, 50; 4. Wolsey-Wessington, 2-2, 22; 5. Burke, 6-0, 20.

Burke moves in for Class B: One of the Mitchell area's best teams this season, the Burke volleyball team is ranked for the first time this season at 6-0, coming off a successful weekend at the Gregory Invitational, in which the Cougars won three times. More should be learned this weekend with No. 1 Warner, No. 5 Burke and receiving votes Faulkton Area all playing in the Arlington Tournament on Saturday, where the host Cardinals are typically strong as well.

Others receiving votes: Colman-Egan (2-1) 10, Faulkton Area (3-0) 3.
