Area wrestling roundup: Winner claims home meet; Parkston takes second place at Little B

High school wrestling action from Jan. 22, 2022, from around the region

PARKSTON, S.D. -- A handful of area teams claimed individual bracket champions Saturday at the Little B Wrestling Tournament Saturday at Parkston High School, but the team scoring competition was dominated by a Minnesota powerhouse.

Behind eight bracket champions, Jackson County Central -- which was ranked No. 2 in Minnesota’s Class 1A earlier this month, dominated the team points race with 302.5 points. JCC’s Payton Handevidt, who is headed to wrestle at Augustana University starting in 2022, was the tournament’s most outstanding wrestler, winning the 160 pound weight class. He was the No. 1-ranked wrestler in Class 1A at 152 pounds entering the week. Handevidt had four pins in 6 minutes and 5 seconds on the day, only bested by teammate Nolan Ambrose, who was the champion at 106 pounds.

Parkston finished second at its home event with 163 points, powered by nine placewinners and three second-place finishers. Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney was third with 139.5 points, followed by Miller/Highmore-Harrold at 129.5 points and McCook Central/Montrose in fifth place with 126.5 points.

For Mount Vernon/Plankinton/Corsica-Stickney, Hadley Tobin earned the 126-pound title with a 6-3 decision over Parkston’s Wyatt Anderson. Porter Neugebauer was a second-place finisher for the Trojans at 152 pounds, as well.

At 145 pounds, Jackson Remmers, of McCook Central/Montrose, earned the bracket title with a 2-1 ultimate tiebreaker victory over Drew Gerlach of MVPCS. Kade Grocott and Austin Hoiten each finished second at 195 and 220 pounds, respectively.

Howard’s Connor Giedd earned a championship at 106 pounds with a first-period pin of Parkston’s Gage Reichert. The Tigers’ John Callies finished in second place at 160 pounds, as Howard finished eighth in the team scoring at 112 points.

At 285 pounds, Woonsocket/Wessington Springs/Sanborn Central’s Quinten Christensen moved to 22-0 on the season with a second-period pin of MVPCS’s Kellen Cassidy in the title match.

Warriors send eight to finals to claim home tourney

WINNER, S.D. -- Behind eight finalists and three champions, the Winner Area wrestling team claimed its home event Saturday at the Winner Armory.

The Warriors scored 229 points, holding off a hard-charging Custer squad that had 203 points. Burke/Gregory was third with 162 points, followed by Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon at 157 points and Parker at 152.5 points.

Winner’s Kaden Keiser continued his undefeated season with a technical fall in the 145-pound championship over Wagner’s Riley Roberts, a 19-4 victory to improve to 33-0.

Riley Orel outlasted Custer’s Jonathan Lewis in the 160-pound final, winning a 1-0 decision in a battle of previously undefeated wrestlers, with Orel now 23-0 and Lewis at 21-1. Maxton Brozik also improved to 26-0 on the season with a bracket victory at 113 pounds, pinning Brock Kotalik, of Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon in the second period.

Bon Homme/Scotland/Avon’s Isaac Crownover earned the 182-pound title over Winner’s Jack Kruger with a 7-2 decision. Crownover is now 29-1 on the season. Other second-place finishers for Winner included Karson Keiser (120), Joey Cole (170), Achilles Willuweit (220)

For Wagner, Jhett Breen knocked off Burke/Gregory’s Owen Hansen in the 132-pound championship with a second-period pin. It was Hansen’s first loss of the season.

Also for the Red Raiders, Brennan Leines picked up a shutout win in the championship match at 285 pounds, topping Winner’s Stetson Shelbourn by a 7-0 decision. Karstyn Lhotak was a second-place finisher at 106 pounds for Wagner and Burke/Gregory’s Taron Serr finished second at 195 pounds.
