Area high school volleyball roundup for Oct. 4: Wessington Springs wins in five sets over Ethan

A look at the volleyball action from Tuesday night in South Dakota.

WESSINGTON SPRINGS -- Wessington Springs rallied from two sets down against Ethan for a five-set victory in a home match on Tuesday night in high school volleyball action.

Set scores were 21-25, 22-25, 25-15, 25-9 and 16-14.

For the Spartans, Avery Orth had 20 kills, with 13 from Sarah Poncelow. Alyssa Grohs had 26 set assists and 24 digs, with Ashlyn Weber tallying 25 digs. Carissa Scheel added four aces in the win.

Ethan was led by Ava Lingemann, who had 14 kills and 35 digs. Marissa Storm had eight kills, four blocks and 26 digs, while Sadie Mueller had four aces. Aubrie Biteler had 24 set assists for the Rustlers.

It was the ninth win in the last 11 matches for Wessington Springs (16-5), which plays Highmore-Harrold on Oct. 7 at home. Ethan (11-12) is off for a week before hosting Howard on Oct. 11.

Top performers

  • Burke’s Adisyn Indahl had 13 kills and 11 digs for the Cougars, while Kailee Frank had 12 kills and five aces in a three-set road win at Avon. 
  • Wagner improved to 21-2 on Tuesday with a sweep against Scotland, with Shalayne Nagel posting 10 kills and Shona Kocer had five blocks for the Red Raiders. 
  • Karly VanDerWerff had 16 kills for Platte-Geddes, which swept Parkston in three sets on Tuesday night. Hadley Hanson had a match-high six aces, and Avery DeVries had 21 set assists and four aces for the Black Panthers. Gracie Oakley had eight kills for Parkston. 
  • Sanborn Central/Woonsocket cruised past Sunshine Bible Academy on Tuesday in Woonsocket on the strength of Kenna Ochsner’s 13 kills, plus 12 kills from Kailynn Eggleston, with Kenlie Fridley adding 15 assists and three aces.  
  • Hanson picked up 12 kills and 14 digs from Annalyse Weber, while Jalyn Kampshoff had 33 set assists and 24 digs from Jersey Kampshoff in a four-set win over Centerville. Thea Gust had 13 kills, 11 digs and three aces for Centerville. 
  • Canistota’s Sierra McGregor had 15 kills in a four-set road win on Tuesday over Menno, while Natalie Becker had a match-high 36 digs. 
  • Elk Point-Jefferson won in four sets on Tuesday night over Viborg-Hurley, with Bentlee Kollbaum tallying 16 kills, while Alyssa Chytka had 28 digs in the victory.
