Area high school basketball for Jan. 10: Hanson girls pull away from MCM

Hanson improves to 6-2 in win over Region 5A foe MCM.

SALEM, S.D. — A 41-17 second-half margin helped Hanson close out a victory over McCook Central/Montrose 75-38 in girls basketball action on Tuesday night between Class A foes.

Hanson had four players score in double-figures, led by 16 each from Eliza Oltmanns and Alyssa Moschell. Taziah Hawkins had 11 points and seven rebounds and Annalyse Weber had 10 points and seven rebounds for Hanson, which shot 25.7% from the field but upped that to 51.9% in the second half and was 24-for-35 on free throws.

Michaela McCormick had 16 points and six rebounds for the Fighting Cougars and Abby Wagner scored 12 points from off the bench on 6-for-6 shooting. MCM was 1-for-22 on 3-pointers and shot 25.5% from the field overall.

Hanson (6-2) plays Parker on Thursday, Jan. 12 in Alexandria. MCM (3-2) hosts Sioux Valley on Thursday, Jan. 12 in Salem.

Girls basketball leaders

  • Liz Boschee did a little bit of everything for Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in a 60-32 win over Kimball/White Lake in Woonsocket. Boschee had 13 points, 13 rebounds, six assists, six steals and five blocks. Kailynn Eggleston had 11 points for SCW, and Ryann Nielsen had 13 points for KWL. 
  • In a 25-point win over Alcester-Hudson, Viborg-Hurley’s Coral Mason contributed 20 points and four assists on the offensive end while picking up 12 boards, four blocks, and six steals. Denae Mach had nine points and five steals in the win as well.
  • As Flandreau beat Garretson 44-29, the Flyers’ Claire Sheppard scored her 1,000th career point, putting up 19 points and eight rebounds. Lizzie Pavlis had nine points and six rebounds, while Lily Klein scored nine points and had six steals.
  • Courtney Sees had 20 points, six rebounds and five steals, as Lily Vanderlei scored 13 points and had seven rebounds as Avon beat Freeman Academy/Marion 51-39
  • Twelve points from Lily Barfuss on 6-for-7 shooting to pace Winner to a win over North Central (Neb.), 45-31. Keelie Kuil had eight points, seven steals and six rebounds for the Warriors. 

Boys basketball leaders

  • Blake Leiferman had 33 points and 15 rebounds as Kimball/White Lake defeated Sanborn Central/Woonsocket in three overtimes on Tuesday, 66-59. Hayden Beigh had 22 points and Jeff Boschee had 20 points for SCW. 
  • Sutton Arend scored 27 points and 10 rebounds in Bridgewater-Emery’s 42-38 win over Ethan, dealing the Rustlers their first loss of the season. Wyatt Sinkie scored 11 points for Ethan and Riley Endres had 10 points. 
  • Gregory beat Wagner 58-48 and Rane Kenzy put up 21 points and had six rebounds. Noah Bearshield had 16 points and six rebounds, while Cruz Klundt had a team-high 11 rebounds. Carter Cournoyer had 14 points and 10 rebounds for Wagner.
  • Mount Vernon/Plankinton put three players over 20 points in an 84-68 win over Wessington Springs. Mason Hetland scored 26 points on 10-for-14 shooting, and had nine rebounds. Reed Rus had 24 points and 10 assists and Jordan Stoltz had 21 points, 10 rebounds and four blocks. Ryder Michalek had 19 points for Springs, while Parker Graff had 17 points for the Spartans. 
  • Easton Kempf scored 17 points for Elk Point-Jefferson in a 74-55 win over Canistota, which got 18 points from Tage Ortman
  • Dakota Valley edged West Central and moved to 7-0 on the season. Isaac Bruns and Jaxon Wingert each scored 18 for the Panthers, while West Central had 19 points from Dylan Stromer and Crew Heier had 13 points, seven rebounds and six blocks.  
  • Aiden Jensen had 21 points in Madison’s 52-44 win over Vermillion, which included 20 points from Andrew Comes, as well. 
  • Tyler Simon scored a game-high 30 points for Potter County in a 64-42 win over Stanley County.
