Area basketball roundup for Jan. 30: Hanson boys secure road win over Canistota

CANISTOTA, S.D. — A strong second quarter helped lift Hanson over Canistota in boys basketball action on Monday.

The Beavers outscored the Hawks 20-10 in the period, taking a 35-20 edge to the halftime break en route to a 57-44 win on the road.

Ethan Cheeseman paced the Beavers, tallying 17 points to go along with seven rebounds as he knocked down three of his seven 3-point tries and all six free throws. Jayce Slaba added 11 points, while Jackson Jarding had nine and Sutton Dewald chipped in eight. Hanson shot 16 of 37 (43.2%) from the field and went 5-for-14 (35.7%) from 3-point range.

For Canistota, Tage Ortman and Will Ortman each posted a team-high 10 points, as the Hawks shot 13-for-53 (24.5%) from the floor.

Hanson (7-5) will face Wagner at home on Tuesday, Jan. 31, while Canistota (6-6) squares off with Viborg-Hurley on the road Tuesday.

Monday’s leaders

Boys basketball

  • Luke Koepsell and Kolt Koepsell each scored 16 points for Howard, while Taiden Hoyer added 10 as the Tigers knocked off Oldham-Ramona/Rutland, 82-24.
  • In Bon Homme’s 51-46 win over Corsica-Stickney, Chapin Cooper scored 18 points and Riley Rothschadl chipped in 16 points and eight rebounds. For the Jaguars, Shad Bosma picked up a 12-point, 10-rebound double-double.
  • Burke’s duo of Reed Benter and Nick Nelson combined for 57 points, as Benter tallied 36 and Nelson added 21 in the Cougars’ 73-36 win over Andes Central/Dakota Christian. 
  • Colome picked up a 59-52 win over Avon as Joseph Laprath poured in 22 points and Kash Heath added 15. Avon’s Landon Thury picked up 19 points in the loss, and Trace Pelton had 16.

Girls basketball

  • Wagner’s Ashlyn Koupal and Macy Koupal combined for 57 points, scoring 23 and 24, respectively, while Emma Yost tacked on 15 in the Red Raiders’ 71-28 win over Irene-Wakonda.
  • Kate Connor tallied 22 points and pulled down nine rebounds for Howard, as the Tigers took down Oldham-Ramona/Rutland 58-36.
  • A 26-point outing from Kami Wadsworth helped push Hamlin past Milbank, 69-35. Marissa Bawdon added 17 points in the win.
  • A balanced scoring effort saw four players go into double figures as Andes Central/Dakota Christian took down Burke, 67-63. Josie Brouwer had 17, Allison Muckey scored 13 and Nadia Van Zuidam and Mahpiyah Irving each chipped in 11. Muckey also had 11 rebounds, while Brouwer had eight. Adisyn Indahl had 23 points in the loss for Burke.
  • Courtney Sees poured in 21 points for Avon as the Pirates took down Colome, 61-36. McKenna Kocmich added 14 and Lila Vanderlei contributed 11 in the win, while Colome’s Toree Ringing Shield had 15 points in the loss.
  • Lyman’s Mak Scott tallied 20 points, while Skyler Volmer added 17 in a 52-44 win over New Underwood.
