Area basketball roundup for Feb. 6: Freeman girls topple Gregory at Corn Palace

MITCHELL — Ashlin Jacobsen put up 14 points for Freeman as the Flyers took down Gregory 60-53 on Monday at the Corn Palace.

Jacobsen did the bulk of her damage across the second and third quarter, picking up 12 points across the two frames.

Freeman held a 15-10 lead after one and both offenses were clicking in the second, as each team put up 18 points in the quarter, leading to a 33-28 halftime advantage for Freeman. The Flyers extended their lead to 45-37 heading to the fourth and fended off the Gorillas for the win.

Kate Miller also got into double digits for Freeman, picking up 12 points, while Cassidy Keiser led all scorers with 16 points for Gregory. Mya Determan had 12 points and Asia VanDerWerff had 11 in the loss.

Freeman (11-6) plays Hanson on Tuesday, Feb. 7, for its next game, while Gregory (6-7) is back in action against Lyman on Tuesday.

Monday’s leaders

Girls basketball

  • Chester Area’s Emery Larson put up 28 points and five rebounds, while Emmerson Eppard added a 15-point, 10-rebound double-double in a 70-29 win over Flandreau Indian. Jacy Wolf chipped in 16 points in the win.
  • South Dakota State commit Katie Vasecka scored 21 points and Mara Grant added 13 points and 11 rebounds for Tea Area, but it wasn’t enough as the Titans fell 59-57 to Harrisburg.
  • Bon Homme’s Jurni Vavruska picked up 14 points, four rebounds, four assists and nine steals as Bon Homme toppled Menno, 50-37. Menno’s Ashton Massey recorded a 13-point, 10-rebound double-double.

Boys basketball

  • Daniel Mitchell recorded a 15-point, 12-rebound double-double while Cruz Klundt added eight points, 10 rebounds and five assists for Gregory in a 45-39 win over Kimball/White Lake. In the loss, Blake Leiferman had 12 points and nine rebounds for the Wildkats.
    A 21-point outing from Drew Ryken helped push Yankton over Huron, 85-57. Michael Mors (16), Rugby Ryken (14) and Mac Ryken (13) also hit double figures in the win, while Reilyn Zavesky poured in 30 in the loss for Huron.
  • Ethan Cheeseman tallied 25 points and pulled down 12 rebounds for Hanson as the Beavers edged McCook Central/Montrose, 58-54. In the win, Jayce Slaba also had a double-double with 16 points and 10 boards, while Mason Sabers poured in 27 points for the Fighting Cougars.
  • A 21-point outing from Drew Ryken helped push Yankton over Huron, 85-57. Michael Mors (16), Rugby Ryken (14) and Mac Ryken (13) also hit double figures in the win, while Reilyn Zavesky poured in 30 in the loss for Huron.
  • Chester Area’s Layke Wold racked up 21 points, six rebounds, five assists and two steals despite a 49-48 loss to Centerville. Luke Knight had 15 points for the Tornadoes.
  • Potter County’s Alex Tanner put up 22 points, 14 rebounds and four assists as teammate Ryder Falkenhagen notched 22 points, 12 rebounds, six assists and five steals in the Battlers’ 77-61 defeat of Stanley County. In the loss, the Buffaloes got 26 points, 10 rebounds and three steals from Brock Zeeb.
