Area basketball roundup for Feb. 24: Lyman girls advance to Class B SoDak 16

GETTYSBURG, S.D. — Big nights from Skyler Volmer and Mak Scott helped push Lyman over Potter County, 44-21, in the Region 6B semifinals.

Volmer and Scott combined for 38 points in the win, with Volmer going for 20 and Scott adding 18. Volmer added nine rebounds, five assists, six steals and six blocks to her line, while Scott had eight rebounds, four steals and two blocks.

Elsewhere for Lyman, Jordyn Scott had six points and four steals, while Annie Brakke had six steals and McKenzie Laverdure had three. The Raiders came away with 26 steals as a team and shot 20-for-52 (38.5%) from the floor.

Lyman (14-7) went into the Region 6B tournament as the No. 3 seed, and with the win over No. 2-seed Potter County (14-8) in the semifinals, the Raiders clinched a spot in the Class B SoDak 16 on Thursday, March 2.

• In Brookings’ 56-44 win over Sturgis, Logan Smidt had 20 points and 12 rebounds, as well as three steals.

Boys basketball

• Hanson’s Ethan Cheeseman picked up his 1,000th career points as he poured in 21 points, pulled down nine rebounds and dished out five assists in a 61-43 win over Elkton-Lake Benton.
• In Bridgewater-Emery’s 71-41 win over Dell Rapids St. Mary, Sutton Arend tallied 22 points, Ben Weber added 17 and Sam Hofer picked up 16, to go along with eight rebounds. 
• Tripp-Delmont/Armour’s Mason Reiner scored 22 points to go along with three steals in a 76-50 win over Colome. Jaden Groeneweg added 15 points in the winning effort, while Joseph Laprath put up 21 points in the loss.
• Reed Benter’s 18 points helped propel Burke past Avon, 46-41.
• Wessington Springs’ Parker Graff had 21 points and Ryder Michalek added 13 points and 10 rebounds in a 53-44 win over Sanborn Central/Woonsocket. Jeff Boshee had 14 points and 11 rebounds for the Blackhawks.
• A 20-point effort from Tyson Huber, to go along with 18 points from Trey Huber helped lift Clark/Willow Lake over Arlington, 84-29.
• In Freeman’s 58-42 win over Gayville-Volin, Tate Sorensen put up 19 points and 10 rebounds for the Flyers, while Spencer Karstens had 21 points and 15 boards in the loss.
• Logan Peskey tallied 25 points for Iroquois/Lake Preston in its 74-46 win over Sunshine Bible Academy. Nolan Triebwasser had 25 points in the defeat for the Crusaders.
