Area basketball roundup for Feb. 2: Efficient offense lifts Wagner girls over ACDC

WAGNER, S.D. — Another efficient scoring night for Ashlyn Koupal helped propel Wagner over Andes Central/Dakota Christian 67-49 on Tuesday night in Wagner.

Koupal led all scorers with 24 points on 10-for-18 shooting from the floor, while going 3-for-6 from 3-point range. She tacked on seven rebounds, seven blocks, a steal and an assist.

Shalayne Nagel added 21 points in the Red Raiders’ winning effort, as well as nine rebounds, six assists and five steals, while Emma Yost had six points, eight rebounds, five assists, four steals and two blocks. Macy Koupal also added nine points for Wagner.

For ACDC, Allison Muckey led the way with 13 points, connecting on three of her seven field-goal attempts and all six of her free-throw tries. Josie Brouwer also cracked double-digit scoring, as she put up 10 points, to go along with two rebounds, two assists and three steals.

Wagner, the No. 3-ranked team in Class A, shot 28-for-55 (50.9%) from the field as a team, while the Thunder shot 18-for-37 (48.6%). The Red Raiders also forced 19 turnovers and won the rebounding battle, 30-14.

Wagner (15-1) will take on Class B No. 1 Viborg-Hurley on Saturday, Feb. 4, in Yankton at Mount Marty University, while ACDC (11-2) travels to Colome on Friday, Feb. 3, for its next game.

Girls basketball

  • Kate Havlik and Kirstie Munsen combined to put up 32 points and 13 rebounds in leading Wessington Springs to a 50-21 win over Lower Brule.
  • Mak Scott put up 31 points, seven rebounds, three assists and seven steals alongside 13 points, eight rebounds, four assists and four steals from Skyler Volmer in Lyman’s 56-46 win over Highmore-Harrold.
  • As Viborg-Hurley topped Bridgewater-Emery, 56-27, the Cougars got 28 points, five rebounds, three assists and four steals from Coral Mason.
  • Northwestern’s Ella Haven tallied 15 points, eight rebounds, three assists, five steals and two blocked shots as the Wildcats defeated Aberdeen Christian, 47-33.
  • Carli Kuyper’s 16-point, 12-rebound double-double helped Lennox notch a 54-36 win over Baltic.
  • Faulkton Area defeated Sunshine Bible Academy, 48-28, behind 14 points and 10 rebounds by Addison Melius.

Boys basketball

  • Chris Nelson poured in 18 points and Carter Cournoyer chipped in 16 for Wagner, as the Red Raiders took down Andes Central/Dakota Christian, 70-47.
  • Dawson Hoffman scored 18 points to help lead Platte-Geddes past Kimball/White Lake, 62-53. In the loss, Blake Leiferman had 20 points and 10 rebounds for the Wildkats.
  • Sutton Arend tossed in 28 points to pace Bridewater-Emery in a 58-42 defeat of Menno.
  • Sioux Valley breezed to an 86-31 win over Flandreau, as Oliver Vincent (27) and Alec Squires (19) combined to net 46 points for the Cossacks.
  • Faulkton Area’s Layne Cotton recorded 26 points, 11 rebounds, five assists, eight steals and one block as Roman DiMaria chipped in 18 points in a 76-33 win over Sunshine Bible Academy.
  • Brian LaRoche Jr dropped in 35 points in Lower Brule’s 70-62 win over Wessington Springs, which got 27 points, four rebounds, five assists and three steals from Blake Larson alongside 20 points, eight rebounds and four assists from Ryder Michalek in the loss.
  • Aberdeen Christian remained undefeated with a 63-49 win over Northwestern, as Jackson Isakson and Ethan Russell each scored 19 points and Malek Wieker had 10 points, nine rebounds and three assists for the Knights.
  • Isaac Bruns poured in 46 points on 17 of 27 shooting while Randy Rosenquist posted nine points, 10 rebounds, 12 assists, seven steals and two blocks in Dakota Valley’s 80-63 win over Elk Point-Jefferson. In the loss, Easton Kempf scored 25 points for the Huskies.
