CHAMBERLAIN-No. 13 seed Bon Homme knew it would have to keep the score low when it squared off with No. 4-seeded Pine Ridge on Tuesday in the Class A SoDak 16 at the Chamberlain Armory.

Coming into the game, the Cavaliers averaged 10 points fewer than the Thorpes. Still, they managed to go toe-to-toe early into the second quarter.

Pine Ridge (18-3) was able to create a double-digit cushion at halftime, but Bon Homme (15-8) cut into the lead early in the third frame. Then the Thorpes started cooking, outscoring the Cavaliers 30-14 in the final 13:37 of the game to advance to the Class A state tournament with a 71-44 win.

"We're not a high-scoring team by any stretch of the imagination," Bon Homme head coach Jason Hein said. "So, we knew we had to play good defense and rebound. We definitely did not rebound well and they shot well."

Pine Ridge was able to connect on nearly 51 percent of its shots for the game, but it gained an advantage on the glass, out-rebounding Bon Homme 31-24, grabbing 13 of them on the offensive end. The Thorpes also owned a 17-8 advantage on turnovers, but the game changed on a timeout in the third quarter.

After the Cavaliers cut the lead to 11, 2:17 into the half, Pine Ridge decided to regroup and it paid dividends. The Thorpes ended the quarter on a 12-4 run and never looked back.

"We came out in zone and we got the shots we wanted," Hein said. "We gave up a wide-open 3 and that put them up 14. We had a shot to bring it under 10 and we didn't do it. If you have three trips where you don't score against a team like that, they're probably going to get something going and they did."

Bon Homme ran its offense through Joey Slama all season and he was used to double-teams, but in the second half Pine Ridge began to hound him with multiple defenders at every turn.

Slama scored a game-high 22 points to go along with six rebounds and three steals, but the Thorpes employed a trapping defense to force him to pass the ball on every touch during the second half.

"Joe O'Rourke is one of the best defenders in the state, so we tried guarding (Slama) one-on-one, but he was getting into the paint," Pine Ridge head coach Casey Means said. "He knows how to use his body real good, so we put the double-team on him and tried to make someone else beat us."

Pine Ridge had four players score in double figures, with Charles Schrader leading the way with 16 points. O'Rourke added 15, while Corey Brown added 14 and Jesse Jensen pitched in 10 points, nine rebounds and four assists as the Thorpes advance to the state tournament for the second year in a row.

Josh Schmidt added 11 points for Bon Homme.
