Pierre pounds Mitchell in wrestling opener

PIERRE--Mitchell High School wrestler Kyle Foote picked up the lone win for the Kernels in their opening wrestling meet of the season on Friday against Pierre.

PIERRE-Mitchell High School wrestler Kyle Foote picked up the lone win for the Kernels in their opening wrestling meet of the season on Friday against Pierre.

The Governors won the match 77-3 in Pierre.

In the 152-pound weight class, Foote defeated Pierre's Garrett Leesman in a 9-5 decision to get Mitchell on the board.

"It was all effort tonight from him," Mitchell head coach Travis Carpenter said. "He wrestled well enough to beat the kid out there. He had a lot of good effort. As a team, we were a little shorthanded tonight, but the kids gave it everything they had. Effort is not an issue with our kids."

Carpenter added a loss like this can motivate the Kernels for future meets.

"You can learn a lot of things from this," Carpenter said. "We need to come together as a group a little more and do more things that build team unity. It will help us throughout the season."

The Kernels are back in action at 10 a.m. today at a dual tournament at Watertown Arena in Watertown.
