First-timers Austin and Mike Hoss won a South Dakota Golf Association Adult/Junior Championship on Sunday.

The Pierre father and son duo won the championship in the 16-18 age division at Lakeview Golf Course.

They decided to play in the tournament this year, given it's their final chance to play in the event.

"He's off to college next year so we will have one more hurrah for both him and I to see if we can have a little fun and we did," said Mike Hoss.

Austin Hoss, who will play golf at South Dakota State University in the fall, said it was special to win the event with his father.

"It's pretty special considering it's the first time we ever played in it and he just wanted to do it because it was the last time before I go to school," Austin said. "It's pretty special to just win it for the first time."

The format was 18 holes and alternate shots for all divisions. Child tees off on odd-numbered holes and the adult tees off on even-numbered holes.

They fired an even-par score of 72, just edging out three other teams with 73s. They recorded four birdies on the front nine to spark a 34 to start, while shooting 38 on the back nine.

They said putting was the difference in their round.

"He kind of got me lined up on putts and I happened to make a bunch of them and he made his fair share of putts, too," Mike Hoss said. "But we kept it in play most of the day and had a good time and rolled the putts in when we needed to."

Up next, Austin plays in the SDGA Junior Championship today and Tuesday at Lakeview. He said winning on Sunday will be a momentum booster for the junior tourney.

"It will give me quite a bit of momentum," Austin said. "I feel like I know the course pretty well. I have played it my whole high school career, but just knowing it now, how the greens are and how the fairways are rolling and everything. It's a good thing that I played (Sunday) and it will give me a lot of momentum for (today)."

In the 11-and-under division, Rapid City's Hayden and Nick Heig won with a 79. In the 12-13 division, Rapid City's Jackson and Mike Swartz won with an 81. In the 14-15 division, Sioux Falls' Peter and Shannon McCormick won with a 75.
