RAPID CITY — A late rally in pursuit of a state championship came up a few points short for Mitchell, as the Kernels fell to Yankton in the Class AA boys basketball state championship game, 65-61, on Saturday night at the Summit Arena.

With the runner-up finish, the Kernels posted the program's best tournament placement since 2012 and ended their 2023 season with a 19-5 record.
