SIOUX FALLS -- The Dakota Wesleyan University men’s basketball team kicked off its season by holding both of its opponents to 62 points.

No. 6 DWU took down both Dakota State University (80-62) and Presentation College (95-62) at the NAIA Sanford Pentagon Classic over the weekend.

A back-and-forth first half against the Trojans turned into a 14-point halftime lead for DWU, as it ended on an 8-0 run. Nick Harden and Ty Hoglund scored five of the eight points, with them leading the team in scoring. Hoglund scored a game-high 29 points on 10 of 17 shooting and Harden added 25 points.

A Hoglund make pushed the Tigers’ lead to 72-53 with 4 minutes, 21 seconds left in the game, but they weren’t able to extend it to 20 points. Dakota State’s 39.1 percent shooting and DWU’s 41-28 advantage on the glass prevented a comeback, though.

Samuel McCloud grabbed 10 boards for the Tigers and added four points and three steals. Tyson Smiley finished with nine points and five rebounds. Tristan Teichmeier added six points and seven rebounds, while Koln Oppold scored five points in the win.

The Trojans’ Josh McGreal scored a team-high 15 points on 4-for-7 shooting.

On Sunday, DWU nearly hit the century mark as it shot 52.2 percent from the field and made seven 3-pointers.

Hoglund paced the offense by draining four 3s en route to a game-high 26 points. Both Smiley (17) and Harden (16) scored in double figures, as well. In total, 14 different players scored for DWU, including six scoring at least six points.

The Tigers led 46-32 at halftime, and then held a 49-30 advantage after the break. They scored the first 10 points of the second half as part of a 19-4 run to extend their lead to 65-36 with 15:04 to play. Smiley nailed a free throw with 10:04 to extend their lead to 30 points, 73-43.

While DWU scorched the nets, Presentation was held to 39.1 percent shooting and 2-for-10 shooting from beyond the arc. It was led by Jackson Becker’s 12 points on 6-for-8 shooting.

Meanwhile, the Tigers dominated the glass again, out-rebounding the Saints 48-31. A plethora of players stepped up, with Smiley and Mason Larson each grabbing six. Collin Kramer and McCloud both had five boards, as well.

Emery native Sawyer Schultz finished with three points and four rebounds. Teichmeier and Oppold both added six points, too.

The Tigers (2-0) open Great Plains Athletic Conference play at 8 p.m. on Nov. 13 against No. Dordt in Sioux Center, Iowa.
