HURON - A halftime lead slipped away from the Mitchell Christian girls basketball team Tuesday at the Huron Holiday Classic, as the Hitchcock-Tulare Patriots managed to knock off the Golden Eagles 42-32 at the Huron Arena.

The Golden Eagles (3-2) were up 16-15 in a game that proved to be a back-and-forth affair for three quarters before the Patriots scored 19 fourth quarter points to finish off MCS.

"We kept it tight the whole game," said MCS coach Jackie Van Laecken. "The girls did a good job defensively in the game but we need to develop a couple more scoring options going forward."

Emily Reynen continued her strong play with a double-double effort for Mitchell Christian. She had 16 points and 10 rebounds in the loss. Abbie Reynen had 10 points and five rebounds, while

Carlie Vander Pol had six points and five rebounds.

"Emily did a great job tonight and we do need some of our other players to step up, including our starters," Van Laecken said. "But we're playing well as a team and if we can do some fine-tuning, we'll be fine."

Shaylyn Steinhueser had 20 points and six rebounds to lead Hitchcock-Tulare.

The Golden Eagles are off until Jan. 7 when they play at Menno. The long break will help Mitchell Christian get healthy and work on the basics.

"We've got a few injuries that will get a chance to heal up and then we can focus on improving things to make sure we're a better team going forward," Van Laecken said.
