HOT SPRINGS -- Parkston eighth-grader Sydney Bormann knocked down an 8-foot putt in extra holes to claim her first golfing championship Tuesday at the Class A state meet in Hot Springs.

She won the title after beating two Hot Springs opponents in one playoff hole, and Parkston claimed the team championship by 18 strokes over Hot Springs.

"What a great day for us," said Parkston coach Eric Norden, whose team finished with a 651.

All three golfers in the playoff finished with a two-day score of 153. Bormann recorded a par the playoff hole and Hot Springs Cassidy Vollmer and Schuyler Wetzel each bogeyed.

"Sydney has worked hard all year long," Norden said. "We're ecstatic for her."

Parkston's Jordan Bormann finished fifth with a 160, Logan Wagner carded a 168 for a 10th-place finish, Sydney Weber took 11th with a 171 and Taylor Bormann was 21st with a 186. For full results, see Page B2.

None of the five golfers for Parkston High School's state title this year were seniors.

"Next year coming back, we'll still have our entire team, so we're hoping for another championship," said Sydney Bormann, who carded a 77 on the first day of the tournament and a 76 on Tuesday. She started her round Tuesday with a birdie.

She admitted she was nervous once the tournament went to extra holes.

"There was a large gallery following us," she said. "But at that time, you have to play your own game."

Norden called Bormann's putt in the playoff a "clutch moment." He said all of her shots on the final hole were good golf shots. After Bormann knocked down her putt, Vollmer missed a 2-foot putt that would have extended the playoff.

"I thought she was going to make it," Sydney Bormann said. "It just lipped. My teammates all came running toward me and we all hugged."

This is Parkston's first state girls' golf championship since 2009. Each of the past two years, the Trojans were state runners-up.

"I was really excited for our team," said Jordan Bormann, who was an all-tournament team selection with Sydney Bormann. "I was especially proud of Syndey. She put in a lot of time and she really deserved it.

"I think our goal next year will be to win another championship because we have everyone back. If we keep working, that's definitely within our reach."
