Parkston posts strong showing at Farrand Invitational

SIOUX FALLS -- The Parkston Trojans wrestling team had a good day on the mat during the opening rounds of the Floyd Farrand Invitational Monday at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School.

SIOUX FALLS - The Parkston Trojans wrestling team had a good day on the mat during the opening rounds of the Floyd Farrand Invitational Monday at Sioux Falls Lincoln High School.

The Trojans brought eight wrestlers to the competition and five of them remained undefeated after the first day of the 18-team tournament. Parkston is seventh in the team competition with 63.5 points and Sturgis stands in the lead with 100 points, followed by second place Sioux Falls Roosevelt at 93 points. Wagner is in ninth place with 54 points and Howard is in 16th place with 20 points.

Parkston was led by Austin Ripp, who had a pair of pins for Parkston at 170 pounds. He pinned Lennox's Brock Stien in 1 minute, 32 seconds and then grabbed a fall in 34 seconds over Austin Hanson of Watertown. Blake Bietz (152) kept his undefeated season intact with a pin of Iman Legesse of Sioux Falls O'Gorman and a quarterfinal tech fall of Tyler Zebell of Lennox. He is now 15-0. Logan Mahoney (120), Kyler Holzbauer (145) and Lucas Bietz (160) also made up the Trojans' undefeated team members on the first day.

For the Red Raiders, 120-pounder Ben Soukup went 2-0 on the day to advance to the semifinal round. Truman Ashes also had a pair of pins for Wagner at 285 pounds, pinning Garrett Berens of Sioux Falls O'Gorman and Tucker Bigge of Parkston in the quarterfinals.

Howard was led by Evan Kizer, who had a first-round bye and then scored a pin in his second round match over Braedon Wallenstein of Lennox at 195 pounds.

Action is set to continue at 10 a.m. today in Sioux Falls, starting with the semifinals and third round wrestlebacks. The championship round is scheduled to begin at approximately 2:20 p.m.
