PIERRE, S.D. -- South Dakota's Game, Fish and Parks Commission has made some adjustments to its deer hunting licensing system and has finalized the dates of the 2019 and 2020 deer hunting seasons.

According to a Friday, May 10 news release, the commission has added a special buck any whitetail license for both residents and nonresidents for the West River deer hunting seasons. The licenses will cost $169 for residents and $554 for nonresidents.

Those who draw a special buck any whitetail deer license will not be eligible for West River first and second license drawings, and those who draw a West River license will not be eligible for a leftover special buck any whitetail license.

Special buck licenses are only valid on private land and applicants must prove that they have permission from a land owner or lessee when they apply.

The commission also increased the number of licenses for the 2019 and 2020 Black Hills firearms deer seasons by 540 total tags -- 500 resident and 40 nonresident. The season will be Nov. 1-30 in both 2019 and 2020.

In total, there will be 3,780 any whitetail deer licenses, 1,188 antlerless whitetail deer licenses and 216 any deer licenses for the 2019 and 2020 those seasons.

Custer State Park 2019 and 2020 deer hunting seasons will run from Nov. 1-30, then from Dec.1-15. In the second season, from Dec. 1-15, hunters will be able to use any weapon. Previously, only muzzleloaders were permitted.

The commission will also distribute more resident deer hunting licenses for both East and West River seasons in 2019 and 2020.

For East River, the commission will distribute no more than 24,510 one-tag and 2,800 two-tag tag resident deer licenses. And for West River, the commission will distribute no more than 24,510 one-tag and 2,800 two-tag tag resident licenses.
