Davison Shooting Club set to host shooting state Junior Olympics
The Dakota Sharpshooters and Davison Shooting Club will play host to a special event this weekend, as the USA Shooting State Junior Olympics is to be held in Mitchell, beginning today and running through Sunday.
A projected 30 shooters from South Dakota born in 1999 or later will compete in three disciplines: air rifle, smallbore rifle and pistol. Shooters are also placed into three age groups—18-20, 15-17 and 14 and under—with winners seeking to qualify for April's National Junior Olympics in Colorado Springs, Colorado.
"It's a definitely a plus," Davison Shooting Club secretary and treasurer Chuck Oster said. "... It's great to have it available and these people have been great to work with."
Shooting begins today at 7:30 p.m. with smallbore rifles, and after watching some of the participants practice at the range during the last month, Oster believes they could treat the audience to quite a show.
"These people have the capability of doing some extremely high scoring," he said. "They not be shooting perfect scores, but they'll be right up there pushing that perfect area."
Shooters placing in the top three in their age group will receive medallions, as well.
