SIOUX FALLS - Down two points at halftime, the Mitchell girls basketball team had Sioux Falls O'Gorman right where the Kernels wanted them Saturday.

But it didn't matter much, as the No. 5-ranked Knights scored 38 points in the second half, including 23 in the third quarter, to leave a two-point halftime lead in the dust for a 57-37 non-conference win.

Mitchell trailed 19-17 at the intermission, thanks to a last-second layup from Tess Limberg to beat the halftime horn. But O'Gorman started the third quarter firing, with an 18-4 run in the first six minutes of the frame. Sophomore standout Emma Ronsiek scored 10 points in the third quarter and 15 of her game-high 19 points in the second half to pace the victory effort.

The Kernels faced a difficult start to the game, trailing 10-0 after 5 minutes elapsed, and struggled again in the third quarter, with only one made field goal in the 8-minute span.

Mackenzie Miller scored eight points for Mitchell, with Mandy Schmidt and Tess Limberg scoring seven. Chelsea Brewster added six points for the Kernels.

Ronsiek had 19 points for the Knights, who visit Harrisburg Tuesday. Rylee Benson and McKenzie Hermanson each scored nine points in the victory, as O'Gorman was able to overcome a 12-for-23 free-throw shooting performance.

Mitchell (7-11) will play its final two regular-season games this week, hosting No. 1-ranked Aberdeen Central on Tuesday at the Corn Palace and visiting Pierre on Friday. As of Sunday, the Governors were 11th in Class AA seed points and Mitchell stood 12th.
