The Kernel boys’ basketball team’s woes continued when the No. 4 Governors came to town Thursday.

Pierre (8-2, 7-2 ESD) used a balanced attack with outside shooting and height under the basket to beat Mitchell 72-49 in an Eastern South Dakota Conference game at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

The Governors established their inside game early and were able to find open shots from the outside in the second quarter. Pierre, which shot 55 percent from the field in the game, scored 15 of its 25 second-quarter points from behind the arc.

“We tried to establish the inside early because if we can get a few buckets in there, we can open up for our guys who can shoot on the perimeter,” said Pierre head coach Terry Becker, whose team outrebounded the Kernels 36-25. “Our guys did a good job of understanding that game plan.”

Mitchell’s Beau Brown scored 11 of his game-high 25 points in the second quarter, but was unable to keep the Kernels from falling behind by 16 at halftime. Pierre led 37-21 after the second and continued to build to its largest lead of the night - 36 points - early in the fourth quarter.

This was Brown’s third consecutive 20-point game.

“It was fun to see Beau get going,” Skoglund said. “He is converting points in the paint, but when he was driving and dishing, we also missed a lot of open threes.”

The Kernels were 4-of-16 from behind the arc and shot 35 percent from the field in the game. Pierre’s defensive effort forced Mitchell into 16 turnovers and allowed Mitchell to have just one player - Brown - score in double figures.

Skoglund said his team is executing better than it did early in the season but isn’t finishing at the basket.

“We did have some great execution and then the ball doesn’t go in,” he said. “That’s frustrating when we run good plays and all five guys are on the same page.”

The Kernels haven’t had two players score in double-digits in its last six games.

The Governors were led by Cooper Walton, a 6-foot-7 senior center, with 13 points and Travis Barton with 11. Austin Christopherson added three 3-pointers for nine points, all in the first half.

Pierre hosts Rapid City Stevens in a nonconference matchup Tuesday.

The Kernels look to end their 11-game skid Tuesday as they travel to ESD newcomer Harrisburg. Mitchell’s only win of the season came against the Tigers (4-6, 2-6 ESD) in its home opener Dec. 21.
