For the first 6 minutes Friday night, the Mitchell High School boys basketball team found itself tied with Brandon Valley.

From there, the No. 3 Lynx went on a 29-4 run, which featured 23 unanswered points, to close out the first half with a 39-11 lead.

That was the way most of the contest went Friday, as Mitchell dropped its 12th game of the season 59-37 to the Lynx at the Corn Palace in Mitchell.

"We lost our focus," Mitchell head coach Erik Skoglund said. "Give Brandon Valley a lot of credit. We matched them blow for blow early in the contest, but then lost everything in the second quarter."

Mitchell (0-12, 0-9 ESD) was held to just two points in the second frame. The Kernels trailed the Lynx 10-9 when Brandon Valley closed the first quarter on a 10-0 run to take a 20-9 lead.

Brandon Valley scored the first 17 points of the second quarter as the game spiraled out of control for the Kernels.

"We shot it really well and we kept making shots. We don't always shoot that well," Brandon Valley head coach Brent Deckert said. "I think it just snowballed on them. The game just got easy for us and that doesn't happen very often."

Brandon Valley (11-2, 10-1 ESD) shot 53 percent from the field, making 24 of 45 field goals and hitting 6 of 19 3-pointers for 31 percent shooting from deep.

And while the offense was rolling, the Lynx defense clamped down on the Kernels.

"They really got in the passing lanes," Skoglund said. "We had a difficult time swinging the ball and their ball pressure was good. They took us out of the game."

After three quarters, Brandon Valley led 44-18 before Mitchell's offense finally picked up in the game's final moments. The Kernels scored more points in the fourth quarter (19) than the first three quarters combined (18).

Cade Terveer led the Lynx with a game-high 12 points, while Cooper Olthoff added 10 points and Evan Talcott chipped in eight points.

Mitchell went 15-of-41 from the field (36 percent), 5-of-20 from deep (25 percent), 2-of-4 from the free-throw line and committed 17 turnovers in the loss. Cody Reichelt scored eight points, while Carter Cavanaugh and Jed Schmidt each chipped in seven points for the Kernels.

"We can play with these guys. It's the inconsistency that's killing us," Skoglund said. "We can't go eight minutes and only get two points. We have to find that consistency and that composure that goes along with scoring."

Mitchell hosts Huron on Tuesday at the Corn Palace.
