Mustangs rally past Bankers in ninth inning

Plankinton led 6-4 after seven innings, but the Mustangs got one run in the top of the eighth inning before retaking the lead in the ninth.
Chase Hetland went 3-for-3 with two doubles and two runs scored, while Jason Spicer had two hits, two runs scored and on RBI and Jake Steffan had two hits and two RBIs. Mount Vernon outhit Plankinton 9-5.
On the mound, Deric Denning picked up the win in relief. Denning allowed one run off two hits with six strikeouts in three innings pitched.
For the Bankers, Josh Engquist took the loss in relief of Travis Gant. Engquist allowed five earned runs off six hits with 11 strikeouts and seven walks in six innings pitched. Trevor Salmonson had a double, while Josh Geppert had a hit and two RBIs. Gant finished with a hit, two runs scored and one RBI.
Mount Vernon (1-1) plays Dimock-Emery in the Sunshine League opener at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Mount Vernon. Plankinton (0-1) plays Corsica-Stickney at 8 p.m. on Thursday in Corsica.
