Mitchell's Kaspen Alm earns recognition as South Dakota volleyball coaches' player of the week

Alm has 51 kills in first five matches

After a blistering start to the season, Mitchell High School senior Kaspen Alm has been recognized as the MaxPreps/American Volleyball Coaches Association player of the week for South Dakota.

Alm, a 6-foot-3 outside hitter for the Kernels, had 51 kills, eight digs, two aces and four blocks in 12 sets for Mitchell, which went 4-1 during the opening week of the season. The weekly selection is made based on programs that submit their stats to

The effort included a 17-kill performance against Sturgis on Aug. 27, matching a career-high in a four-set win over the Scoopers. She also had a .381 hitting percentage against Watertown at the Huron Invitational, good for 10 kills in two sets and added nine each against Chester Area and Sioux Falls Lincoln.

Mitchell hosts Sioux Falls Washington at 7 p.m. Thursday at the MHS gym.
