SIOUX FALLS -- It was one of those days for the Mitchell High School girls golf team.

The Kernels logged a third-place finish at the Sioux Falls Washington Invitational on Monday. Mitchell shot a 340 and tied with Aberdeen Central, but the Golden Eagles won the playoff via the low score on No. 5. Sioux Falls O’Gorman (319) captured the team title at Willow Run Golf Course.

Mitchell assistant coach Jeff Meyerink said “it was one of those days” for the Kernels, who was coming off a 328 at their home invitational on May 14.

“We weren’t really ready to play for some reason,” Meyerink said. “The girls started out slow and couldn’t get things rolling. It just kind of snowballed from there. I know they want to do better than that. … I know that they left some shots out there today for sure.”

Harrisburg’s Reese Jansa fired a two-under-par 68. Shannon McCormick and Lauren Sutcliffe shot 75s to power O’Gorman’s first-place finish.

Mitchell’s Ella Flippin and Masy Mock shot 83s, with Flippin securing seventh place due to a scorecard playoff. Flippin carded a 41 on the front nine and a 42 on the back nine.

“She just is doing everything above and beyond she needs to,” Meyerink said. “It’s great to see a player mature that quickly and just coming in with solid round after solid round as our four spot. The last couple tournaments she’s been right up there.”

Mock shot a 40 on the front nine and 43 on the back nine. Mitchell’s Allison Meyerink tied for 11th place with an 84. Quinn Dannenbring (90), Maddie Childs (94) and Jayli Reints (96) rounded out the Kernel golfers.

Mitchell plays at the Brookings Invitational on Thursday at Brookings Country Club. Coach Meyerink said the Kernels quickly turned their attention to Thursday’s meet after their Monday performance.

“That was kind of good to hear them talking about it and trying to figure out a game plan and already thinking ahead for Thursday,” coach Meyerink said.
