SIOUX FALLS - The Mitchell High School gymnastics team cruised to another victory Monday at the Sioux Falls Roosevelt Quadrangular.

Mitchell scored 140.750 points Monday as a team, with Josie Dierks winning the all-around title with a score of 35.650 points. Teammate Maria Krall was close behind with 35.600 points in the all-around.

“Overall, for a weeknight meet, we had a good showing,” Mitchell coach Audra Rew said. “We had a few falls on beam and we’re going to need to get that back to where we were earlier in the season. But we’re getting some kids pre-qualified for state and that’s what we want to be accomplishing at this time of year. That’s a good goal to meet.”

Dierks won the floor (9.100) and vault (9.400) events to help claim the top individual honors and the first all-around title for her this season. Krall was tops in the uneven bars, posting an 8.850, with Dierks finishing second (8.550) and Gracie Czmowski taking third in the bars (8.450).

“She’s just very consistent and very solid,” Rew said of Dierks. “We know she’s going to be a very solid contributor and she had one of the best vaults I’ve ever seen from her. Her routine top score is a 9.4 and that’s what she scored and that’s pretty much perfect.”

Alyssa Hughes was second-best on floor for Mitchell, tying with Montrose’s Jocelyn Krouse, each scoring an 8.950. Hughes scored a 34.350, allowing her to qualify for the state meet as an individual in the all-around, joining Krall and Dierks.

Parkston/Ethan/Hanson’s Tyra Zens was the top performer on the balance beam, scoring a 8.750. Krall was second (8.700), followed by Dierks (8.700). Krouse finished the night in third on the all-around (34.900) led by her 9.250 score in the vault.

Mitchell is at the Huron Invite on Saturday.
