RAPID CITY -- For the third-straight year, the Mitchell High School tennis team recorded a top-three finish at the South Dakota state tennis tournament on Saturday in Rapid City.
The Kernels finished the tournament in third place with 462 points, while Sioux Falls Lincoln won the state championship with 690 team points. Mitchell had finished as the tournament runner-up in the previous two years.
“We had some goals coming into the season and I think we met those goals,” Mitchell head coach Pat Moller said. “There’s a lot of uncertainty in the season, and these kids have worked hard to make themselves successful. We were about .500 on Saturday, and we thought it would be a good day if we could do that. I think we finished at or above our seed at all but two flights, which is incredible.”
The No. 1 doubles tandem of Alex Hegg and Jacob Dahme were close to a state title, but fell to Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Sam Dobbs and Kaleb Dobbs 6-3, 6-3 in the title match.
“Playing the Dobbs kids, you know it’s a challenge because they’ve never been beat all year long,” Moller said. “Those two played a really great match, and I think it was the featured match of the tournament. I think everyone knew the top two one doubles teams were playing, because a big crowd was watching that match.”
The No. 2 doubles tandem of Gray Determan and Carter Cavanaugh earned a third-place finish, while Jared Suelflow and Baley Miller at No. 3 doubles took fourth.
In singles play, Suelflow -- a sophomore -- fell in the state title match at No. 5 singles 6-2, 6-1 to Sioux Falls Lincoln’s Graham Leonard.
“He had a great tournament,” Moller said. “I think he was a little disappointed with himself, but he got experience and now he knows what it takes to get there. He’ll be better prepared to get that title next year.”
Hegg (No. 1), Dahme (No. 2) and Determan (No. 3) all earned fifth-place finishes. Cavanaugh finished third in No. 4 singles and Adam Loes took fourth in No. 6 singles.
Moller said standing on a podium on Saturday was a fitting end to a successful season.
“We only lost two duals all year, won the ESD and got third in the state,” he said. “We’re going to really miss our seniors Gray Determan and Alex Hegg, but we have five guys coming back next year with state tournament experience. We’ve positioned ourselves well for success.”
