The Mitchell girls' tennis team mixed it up on Saturday.

The Kernels split their home triangular with Spearfish and Yankton at Hitchcock Park. Mitchell defeated Spearfish 7-2 and lost to Yankton 5-4.

The Kernels were without one player against Yankton, while Sammy Pooley sat out with a minor elbow issue. That allowed coach Pat Moller to shuffle his lineup around against the familiar foe.

"We just wanted to mix it up a little bit," Moller said. "Since it was the third time we played them."

Avery Larson played the No. 1 singles match in place of Pooley. Larson lost 10-3 against Anne Knoff.

"She battled Anne Knoff hard and came up a little short at the end," Moller said. "It was a good opportunity for her."

Larson was also paired with senior Kaihlen Smith in the No. 1 doubles match. It was Smith's last home match of her career.

"It was kind of nice to see her play with Avery at No. 1 doubles; kind of play at the top there," Moller said. "She has worked hard all year long and has really been playing well lately. It was kind of a fun day to mix things up a little bit in all our singles and doubles."

The Kernels won four of the six singles match, while winning all the doubles matches against Spearfish.

The Kernels will play in a triangular today in Huron against Huron and Aberdeen Roncalli.
