The Mitchell High School girls' golf team took ninth place Tuesday at the Mitchell Invitational at Lakeview Golf Course in Mitchell.

Head coach Mark Horan said the team's chipping and putting was not at the level he hoped, but that overall the team's performance was respectable.

"The scores weren't as good as expected," he said. "If I had to give the team a grade, I'd give them a B plus."

The team finished with a 386 and was led by Kristin Sabers, who tied for 11th place with a score of 85.

"This shouldn't worry her at all as far as not being in the top five," Horan said. "She's still right there with the best golfers in the state. She hits the ball farther than anybody, but I think you put a little extra pressure on yourself when it's our own invite."

Brookings' Lauren Fitts finished first at the meet with a round of 74. For full results of the Mitchell Invitational see Page B2.

Yankton took home the team title with a round of 332, besting second-place Pierre by 12 strokes.

Mitchell's Macy Miller finished with a score of 93, four shots shy of breaking the top 20.

"It was another solid round out of her," Horan said. "She's shot well in three tournaments in a row now."

Horan said his goal for Kylie Barington has been to break 100. She shot a 102 Tuesday, and Horan was pleased with that performance in windy conditions and having played in a tournament the day before.

"I'm sure we were a little bit tired," Horan said about the team competing two days in a row. "The state tournament is two days in a row, so I think this helped us show what kind of stamina it takes."

Fourteen Mitchell golfers were able to compete in the home invite and get some valuable experience for the future.

"A lot of girls got to have a fun experience and learned what tournament golf is all about," Horan said.
